一月九日星期三 January 9, Wednesday - A Day


For Chinese Level I students we still worked on the calendar. First we reviewed the old words like 四月八月 十二月 二月 五月 九月十一月一月六月三月七月 十月and the following words
 dǎsuàn = (to) plan to
麼 zěn me = how?
  qìngshēng = celebrate birhtday
shēng rì = birthday
  對 kāipàiduì = hold a party

 影 kàn diànyǐng = watch a movie
We learned the new words
起司qǐ sī  = cheese
蛋糕dàn gāo = cake
巧克力qiǎo kè lì = chocolate

今天jīn tiān = today
明天míng tiān = tomorrow
昨天zuó tiān = yesterday
每天měi tiān = every day

                                                    nǐ   xǐ huān chī    qǐ sī   dàn gāo hái shì  qiǎo kè   lì dàn gāo
We did a survey with the pattern 你喜歡吃起司蛋糕還是巧克力蛋糕? to know which period students like 起司蛋糕better or chocolate cake better. It came out: 1st period students loves 起司蛋糕 as well as 巧克力蛋糕. 十六人like 起司蛋糕 and 十六人 like 巧克力蛋糕. And 2nd period students like 起司蛋糕 a little bit better; 八人like 巧克力蛋糕 while 九人like 起司蛋糕.

jīn tiān shì jǐ yuè jǐ hào
今 天  是幾月 幾號? = What date is today?
míng tiān shì jǐ yuè jǐ hào
 明    天 是幾月幾號? = what date is tomorrow?
zuó tiān shì jǐ yuè jǐ hào
  昨 天  是幾月幾號? = what date is yesterday?

After the whiteboard activity, we read a short story about Payton and Eli. Students work with their friends and translate the story to English and draw 6 pictures to the story.

One of the 1st period students, Taelyn, asked a great question which led us to introduce an abacus - dǎ is beat then why  dǎsuàis plan to. In deed dǎ is beat/hit. suàhere means 算盤 suànpán - abacus which is a calculator for ancient Chinese people.  dǎsuàliterately means beat the beams on the abacus to calcultate for budget so its further reference to plan to. With Taelyn's question we introduced the abacus and how to use it for the 1st period students.

For 2nd period students we did the similar activities as 1st period students but we added in flashcard making as it is a much smaller class and we had extra time to practice the words.

For Chinese Level II and III first we reviewed the old words like
想了半天xiǎng le bàn tiān = think for half a day
看見kàn jiàn = see
河川hé chuān = river
zì = characters
許多xǔ duō = many
奇怪qí guài = weird, strange
拿起ná qǐ = take (up)
報紙bào zhǐ = newspaper
螞蟻mǎ yǐ = ant
毛毛蟲máo máo chóng = caterpillar
yǎo = bite
樹葉shù yè = leaves
dòng = holes
表示biǎo shì = represent
我想你wǒ xiǎng nǐ = I miss you
 and then we learn 3 new words
商量shāng liàng = discuss
大事情dà shì qíng  = big situation, big issue, big thing/problem

很有用 hěn yǒu yòng = very useful 

After that students worked with their friends/classmates for 20 minutes to translate a story into English. And then the teacher read the sentence by sentence in Chinese and the students voluntarily to translate aloud. We also used a little bit TPRStory circling questions to check students' comprehension. Later students spent another 20 minutes to answer the questions to the story. Chinese Level II students read the story with pinyin while Level III read it without pinyin. Lots of students took the challenge and were able to read the questions in Chinese without pinyin and I am proud of them.
