一月七日星期一 January 7, Monday - A Day

For Chinese Level II and III we reviewed the words learned last A Day and then working on a very short story. We also learned the following new words-

毛máo 毛máo 蟲chóng  = caterpillar
螞mǎ 蟻yǐ = ant
寫xiě 字zì  = write
樹shù 葉yè = leave
咬yǎo = bite
洞dòng = hole(s)
表biǎo 示shì = represent
我wǒ 想xiǎng 你nǐ = I miss you

We used PQA and TPRS circling questions to read this very short story and then we practiced speed reading and recognizing Chinese characters; Level II students read the story with pinyin while Level III read the story without pinyin for 1 minute and then vice versa. We repeated this procedure for 3-4 times. After that, some Level III students were challenged to read this story without pinyin. Those are Level III students - Samatha, Corbin, Liam, Elias, Luke, Maddie, Nathalie, Jefferson, Brandon; and Level II students - Luis and Rich.

For Chinese Level I students we still worked on the calendar. First we worked on the following new words -

dǎ suàn = (to) plan to
zěn me = how?
qìng shēng = celebrate birhtday
shēng rì = birthday
kāi pài duì = hold a party
kàn diàn yǐng = watch a movie

We used PQA and small whiteboards to practice these words; we used the sentence structure: ________的生日在_____月______日and for 1st period students, we went through everyone's birthday; each student had to tell their birthday in Chinese and a chosen student had to translate the birth date to English. For 2nd period students we didn't go through everyone's birthday but we played "wuziqi" game with the above-mentioned sentence structure. For example, Student A said: Kali 的生日在九月九日 and Student B said: Kali 的生日在九月八日, etc.
