四月三十日星期二 - April 30, Tuesday - B Day

Chinese Level I absent students - please copy down the words we learned and show the teacher your notes when you come back.

We used ASL (TPR) to help students to introduce the new words like 高興 有錢 不給 to connect these words to their memory. After introducing the words, we read the story on the textbook. First, the teacher read aloud the sentence by sentence and the students translated aloud into English as a whole class. To make sure every student understand the meaning, choral translation was required. Later, students were asked to fold a sheet of linepaper into half and then on the first half they write each sentence of the story in pinyin and on the other half they translate the sentence into English. The last 40 minutes we went to the computer lab and students learned how to type the story in Chinese characters.

高興gāo xìng = glad/happy
有錢yǒu qián = has money/rich
不給bù gěi = don't give

Chinese Level I absent students - please copy down the words we learned and show the teacher your notes when you come back.
Chinese Level II and II absent students - please ask for your actfltesting's username and password to take the test at home which you will need a microphone and earpiece. If you don't, you'll need to come to the class at the advisory time before or after school to do the test.

We used ASL (TPR) to help students to introduce the new words like 高興 有錢 不給 to connect these words to their memory. After introducing the words, we read the story on the textbook. For Chinese Level II and III, we did the actfltesting but it didn't go smooth as we thought. First, lots of the headsets and microphone doesn't work; students got frustrated. Since the volumn is so low students barely could hear it so lots of them just didn't pay much effort in.

四月十六日星期二 April 16, Tuesday - B Day

Today we learned a poem in Chinese Level I, and a poem for Level II and III.
Chinese Level I we worked on the poem 靜夜思 written by one of the best poets in Chinese literature 李白. We first recited the poem a couple of times and imitated how to recite the poem as ancient Chinese poets did. Later we used small whiteboards to practice each phrase and then line. Next we recited the poem that was emitted a couple of words off the poem each time until all the words were gone and students were able to memorize it. At the end we did speedy reading. Some students were able to  memorize the poem without pinyin and reminders while some needed a couple of reminders.

For Chinese Level II and III, we learned the poem 金縷衣 by 杜秋娘. Similar to Chinese Level I activity, we recited the poem first and then had a couple of Chinese Level II students and a couple of Level III students recited it individually. And then we took out a word from each line, and recited the poem again, and had a couple of volunteer Chinese Level II students and a couple of volunteer Level III students recited it individually. After that we took out another word from each line and recited the poem again; a couple of students from each level recited the poem. We repeated these steps until only two words from each line left.
At the end of the class, we did speedy writing; students worked as pairs and read the poem up to 1 minute and then up to 30 second, 15 seconds, and 8 seconds. At the end, the teacher performed how fast she read the poem in 30 seconds; it came out she read the poem around 5-6 times in 30 seconds.
