April 12, Thursday 四月十二日星期四 - A Day

Today I headed to Washington DC to attend National Chinese Language Conference and received the award from Chian government for our effort in promoting Chinese program as Confucius Classroom, which one of one hundred in the United States. Even though I was not here for students, yet our Ma Ke Laoshi, our former student teacher, was our sub and brought lots of fun with students.

Here was the lesson plan

Chinese Level III &II- they have the story about Lazy boy named Mermaidman. Ask them to pull it out and give them the blank story frame form (which is on my desk).

#1, Have the students pick up 16 sentences from the story and copy down in Chinese characters in the form and draw pictures to the sentences.

#2, Give each table two flashcards and one piece of paper. Assign each table a number and have them write down the number on their paper. Tell the students they are going to create one or two sentences with the words on the flashcards in 1.5 minutes. After 1.5 minutes they are going to pass the paper to the next table and the next table is going to read the written sentence(s) and then create a setnece with the word on their flashcard but the sentence they create has to be related or has connection to the 1st sentence. After it's done, the paper has to pass to the next table. Repeat this until all the tables receive their original paper.

#3, Please tell students to pull out of a piece of linedpaper and you read the stories they write table by table and have students listen to the stories and summarize what the story is about.
#4, if there's still some time left after they've done all the assignments and you would like to play some games, please feel free and do it.

Chinese Level I - they also have the same article about Lazy boy named Mermaidman but they only need to work on the first 3 paragraphs.

#1, Have the students copy down the story sentence by sentence in pinyin in the story frame form. (There are only 13 sentences).

#2, Give each table one flashcard with one Chinese word on it and one piece of paper. Assign each table a number and have them write down the number on their paper. Tell the students they are going to create a sentence with the word on the flashcard in 1.5 minutes.
