I wasn't here today for the Chinese Level I students due to the doctor's appointment. Well, I was drawn blood for 17 tubes this morning for the lab. Good luck for me! :)
As to the sub plan, Chinese Level I students were asked to trace Chinese characters that 2nd period students did yesterday. After that they watched a video about China, Lijiang with the sub.

十二月十三日星期四 December 13, Thursday - A Day
Today we had much better classes compared to Tuesday. For Chinese Level I we first introduced three words : 比薩 好嗎 抓 Last time the 2nd period students didn't learn 短 高 矮 頭髮 so we placed these words on the boards for them to learn. We used PQA to practice these words and had a great fun. After PQA, we used small whiteboards to practice the words and then we read a story as a whole class. And then we played 五子棋. My students love the game and practiced speaking Chinese at the game.
比薩 bǐ sà = pizza

Our Chinese Sister School came and visited in June
We just received the photos from your Chinese Sister School - AnShan HuaYu Foreign Language Experimental Middle School; they visited Utah last June. Since we didn't have students in school during their visit, we took them to visit Syracuse Elementary School and this Mr. Law's class.
十二月十二日星期三 December 12, Wednesday - B Day
Fro 5th & 6th period, I first reviewed the old words like 坐在地上zuò zài dì shàng = sit on the floor
走到那裡zǒu dào nà lǐ = walk over to....頭髮 tóu fà = hair and 拿, 用,剪,看,指一指,高興,生氣,跑了,寫字,書 and learned the new words about 長chang = long 短duǎn = short (length)高gāo = tall 矮ǎi = short (height) and 比較bǐ jiào = compared to, more/less...., ___er
We used PQA to learn the new words. Amazingly students were answering me in a full sentence. After that we took a quiz that other periods did - 15 words about the old words learned these pass two weeks or so. We have 15 students receive above 80% while 9 students received lower than that. We discussed the reasons. After the discussion those students who were not aloud respond to the teacher's questions and failed the quiz started to respond to them aloud which is a good sign.
Next we played a game named 五子棋 that Chinese Level II & III played yesterday but we were using different words.
Students were asked to copy down the words on the grids and then played the game twice. For 6th period, we had some more time so we practiced with small whiteboards.

十二月十一日星期二 December 11, Tuesday - A Day
Fro 1st period, I first expressed my disappointment about the quiz they did last time that half of the students failed to reach the goal - 80%. We discussed why this happened and how it happened - students zoned out in class, not take notes, not respond to the questions aloud, etc. After that, we started to learn the following three words
坐在地上zuò zài dì shàng = sit on the floor
走到那裡zǒu dào nà lǐ = walk over to....頭髮 tóu fà = hair
As usual, we first review the old words like 拿, 用,剪,看,指一指,高興,生氣,跑了,寫字,書。While we introduced 頭髮 tóu fà, we also extensionly introduced
長chang = long
短duǎn = short (length)
比較bǐ jiào = compared to, more...., ___er
最zuì = most...., ____est
高gāo = tall
矮ǎi = short (height)
For 1st period, we used each student to do the comparison (PQA) and had a great fun time. the last 30 minutes students worked on the page 16 on the textbook; they copied down the story in pinyin and translate it into English.
For 2nd period which we have a smaller class but more talkative students who like to argue with the teacher. And the extension words only reach to 長chang (long) and 短duǎn = (short in length). We did the similar things that 1st period students did but since it is a smaller class and noisier class we added in a whiteboard activity to calm the students down and to pay more attention to learn.
For 3rd period Chinese II and III, most of time we practice a game named "五子棋". Each student drew 13 x 13 lines on a piece of paper with 13 words - 洗臉,刷牙,洗澡,吃早飯,起床,穿衣服,刮鬍子,醒來,吃午飯,去上學,梳頭髮,看電視,睡覺 on the first horizontal row and vertical column. Students started to use the phrase "先....然後...' it's like a tic-tac-toe game but to win you need to have 5 Os or 5Xs in a row. For example,
Student A: 我先起床然後刷牙wǒ xiān qǐ chuáng rán hòu shuā yá
And then student A can make a O on the box cross with 起床qǐ chuáng and 刷牙shuā yá
Student B: 我先刷牙然後梳頭wǒ xiān shuā yá rán hòu shū tóu
And then student B can make a X on the box cross with 刷牙shuā yá and 梳頭shū tóu.
Whoever has more than 5 Os or 5 Xs consequently in a row wins the game.
After the game, we collected the story books the students write on a Reading A-Z book (My Day), and showed some of the students' storybooks through the document camera and for TPRS circling questions.

十二月十日星期一 December 10, Monday - B Day
Today 5th period's pace is quite slow and noisy; few students came in late with their breakfast; eating their breakfast and not paying attention to the lesson which we read the page 16 on the textbook "I Love Learning Chinese"我愛學中文. The teacher first reviewed the words learned since last two week and read sentence by sentence. The teacher asked voluntary students to translate it and we went through this process twice. Next the students were asked to copy down the story in pinyin and translate the story into English. They also needed to copy down the questions and answer the questions in pinyin. For those students who were done faster than the others, they paired up and did the speed writing; their objective is to finish reading the story in 15 seconds. Of course for those students who brought breakfast in they didn't pay attention and kept asking details and English meanings. Sad to say that they had been waiting for help but not self-reliant.
6th period was great and respectful class. As usual we reviewed all the words and went through the story in translation. We had more time to do the TPRS circling questions. Next, students were the students were asked to copy down the story in pinyin and translate the story into English. They also needed to copy down the questions and answer the questions in pinyin. Most of the 6th period students finished all the assignments in 20 minutes while 5th period took an hour to do the same assignment. So, 6th period students were able to watch IP man 2 for 15 minutes.
If you are absent today and would like to receive your participation and assignment's grade; you will need to
copy down the story in pinyin, translate it into English, copy down the question in pinyin, and answer the questions in pinyin.
坐在地上zuò zài dì shàng = sit on the floor
走到那裡zǒu dào nà lǐ = walk over to....
頭髮 tóu fà = hair

十二月七日星期五 December 7, Friday- A Day
For Chinese Level I, II, &III, today is the last time of the mid-term for grade; we first reviewed all the words taught, and gave students some time to study the notes and words. Next we had a quiz on the topic; 15 questions about the words taught for the last two weeks.
十二月六日星期四 December 6, Thursday - B Day
I had a training today about language labs that we're going to install one in our school. I learned lots of communicative activities. For the students they watched the video about Chinese cultures.
十二月五日星期三 December 5, Wednesday - A Day
I was sick and laid in bed all day so I asked a sub to help me out. We watched video about Terro Cotta and/or Chinese food. I heard the students say that they played the color game with the sub because the video was too boring for them to finish it. :)

十二月三日星期一 December 3, Monday- A Day
For Chinese Level I, First we introduced three words - 書, 畫, 圖. We compared the smiliarity and differences between 書 and 畫 and the words among 馬, 媽, and 嗎. Next we read the story and use circling questions. Students were asked to translate the story to English and then answer the questions 1-30. We discussed the answers together. Next we played flashcards.
For Chinese Level II and III, first we switched the seats and have students made name tags in their Chinese names and look up the dictionaries to know what their Chinese names mean.
Next, we worked on the package of the story which there are 4 pages; 1st page with full pinyin, 2nd page with 80% pinyin, 3rd page with 60% pinyin, and 4th page without pinyin. For Level III students their goal is to read the article without pinyin while Level II students to read the article with 80% pinyin. We translated the article into English and make sure students understand its meanings. After that we practice reading; page by page. Liam S. challenged to read the article without pinyin and he did a great job.
十一月三十日星期五 November 30, Friday - B Day
For Chinese Level I, we work on the story reading. We first read aloud the story sentence by sentence and use circling questions to check comprehension. After that, students were asked to translate the story into English and then answer the questions from questions 1-10 or 1-15. Next we used the flashcards made before and played bingo again. After binggo game, students introduced their family in the target language.

For example : 有一個男孩 他的名字叫Alex
有一個男孩嗎?
有一個男孩還是女孩?
有一個女孩嗎?
有一個什麼?
=====
男孩的名字叫Alex嗎?
男孩還是女孩的名字叫Alex?
