How to type in Chinese?

Some students asked me how to typ Chinese at home.
#1, you need to have Chinese in your computer.

#2, How do you know if you have Chinese in your computer?
Go to the website tw.yahoo.com and see if what you see on the page is Chinese characters or boxes. If it shows boxes then it means you don't have Chinese in your computer?

#3, How to install Chinese in your computer?
a. You will need a disc named Microsoft Windwows XP Professional Service Pack 2 or 3 to download it.
b. go to control panel -- region and language -- language -- install files for East Asian Language -- place the disc in and follow the installation procedures.

#4, After I download the East Asian Languages, can I type Chinese now?
No, not yet. You have to set up your keyboard.
a. Control Panel -- Region and Language -- Language -- Details -- Add -- choose Chinese (Taiwan) -- check the box -- OK -- properties -- Keyboard Mapping -- choose "HanYu PinYin" and then click OK -- Advance -- Make sure the box "turned off advanced text services" is unchecked -- and/or Apply.

b. Repeat the step a but this time choose Chinese (PRC).

By doing so you may type Chinese Traditional and Chinese simplied. MAKE SURE the box "turned off advanced text services" unchecked; otherwise, you won't be able to see the language bar pop-up.

#5, After you can see the language bar "EN" on the right bottom at the screen of your computer, you may click the "EN" and it will show the different languages for you - Chinese (Taiwan), Chinese (PRC), and English. By this time, you may choose the one input and start to type Chinese.

April 13, Friday 四月十三日星期五 - B Day

8th period -
It seems they don't get too many words from the story, so they definitely need to work on their vocabulary more.

#1, Please help them practice the words on the flashcards with small whiteboards.

#2, Please ask them use the the story (only the first 3 paragraphs) and copy down the story but with some changes on the names and location. For example, (write this done on the board) change Mermaidman into Spiderman, change shafa into yizi; change fangjian to fangzi, and change Jeremy Lin into Justin Bierber.

#3, Give each table one flashcard with one Chinese word on it and one piece of paper. Assign each table a number and have them write down the number on their paper. Tell the students they are going to create a sentence with the word on the flashcard in 1.5 minutes. After 1.5 minutes they are going to pass the paper to the next table and the next table is going to read the written sentence(s) and then create a setnece with the word on their flashcard but the sentence they create has to be related or has connection to the 1st sentence. After it's done, the paper has to pass to the next table. Repeat this until all the tables receive their original paper.

April 12, Thursday 四月十二日星期四 - A Day

Today I headed to Washington DC to attend National Chinese Language Conference and received the award from Chian government for our effort in promoting Chinese program as Confucius Classroom, which one of one hundred in the United States. Even though I was not here for students, yet our Ma Ke Laoshi, our former student teacher, was our sub and brought lots of fun with students.

Here was the lesson plan

Chinese Level III &II- they have the story about Lazy boy named Mermaidman. Ask them to pull it out and give them the blank story frame form (which is on my desk).

#1, Have the students pick up 16 sentences from the story and copy down in Chinese characters in the form and draw pictures to the sentences.

#2, Give each table two flashcards and one piece of paper. Assign each table a number and have them write down the number on their paper. Tell the students they are going to create one or two sentences with the words on the flashcards in 1.5 minutes.

#3, Please tell students to pull out of a piece of linedpaper and you read the stories they write table by table and have students listen to the stories and summarize what the story is about.
#4, if there's still some time left after they've done all the assignments and you would like to play some games, please feel free and do it.

Chinese Level I - they also have the same article about Lazy boy named Mermaidman but they only need to work on the first 3 paragraphs.

#1, Have the students copy down the story sentence by sentence in pinyin in the story frame form. (There are only 13 sentences).

#2, Give each table one flashcard with one Chinese word on it and one piece of paper.

April 11, Wednesday 四月十一日星期三 - B Day

After we did the calendar, we reviewed some words on the boards. We played 'claping' game to review the words. And well, seemed it was a challenge for some students to catch up the beats and to say the words. Of couse some students complained it was hard, Chinese numbers and colors were easier. Of course, numbers and colors were easier but reviewing the words is important as well. After the game, students were given a story about Mermaidman, they were asked to copy down the story on the story form sentence by sentence and draw pictures to the sentence. Except a couple of girls still came to class late and not showed their interest in learning others did their best and they did great job.

1st period students were asked to take turn to read sentence by sentence, did the time-read and write words on the whiteboard to have their partner to tell what the word is and what it means. 2nd period students were asked to read through the story on their own and highlighted the words/phrases they didn't understand. 3rd period students were asked to cut the flashcards off and raised up the correct flashcard according to the word the teacher said. Af the very beginning of the 3rd period we were a little off track; talking about making-up/ comsmetics. The reason we mentioned that part because we used the comsmetics to explain the words - 效xiào 果guǒ = effect反fǎn 效xiào 果guǒ =mal-effect, de-ffect.

Today Gage M. came up to the classroom and did his presentation. He did a great job. Briant tried to do his but since he forgot how to say what he likes and what he doesn't like, he decided to re-do it next time.

After the calendar introduction, we quickly use PQA to introduce the word 越yuè 來lái 越yuè ....and had students choose "誰shéi 越yuè 來lái 越yuè...?" For example, Gage 越yuè 來lái 越yuè 聰cōng 明míng; Matthew 越yuè 來lái 越yuè 懶lǎn 惰duò; Jasmin 越yuè 來lái 越yuè 準zhǔn 時shí; Dayln 越yuè 來lái 越yuè 遲chí 到dào; Alozao越yuè 來lái 越yuè 乾gan 淨jìng, etc.

Next each student received a package of flashcards of the words we've learned for the past 2 weeks and a full story about the lazy boy Mermaidman who wants to be healthy and strong. 懶惰的男孩想要體格健壯. Students worked as a group of three and translated the story for the first 3 -4 paragraphs.

Last we used TPRS cycling questions to help students' listening, speaking and comprehension.
